Waldgeist top price for Irish Derby as we take on French raider

Aidan O’Brien’s Epsom Derby hero Wings Of Eagles continues to be well supported for the upcoming Irish equivalent at the Curragh.

The market leader is now just 7/4 from 2/1 for Saturday’s showpiece event with his main rivals currently weak in the betting.

Andre Fabre’s French raider Waldgeist is now top price at 5/2 while Cracksman has also been relatively friendless.

Pat Smullen’s ride is out to 3/1 from 5/2 with Coolmore’s second-string Capri next best at 9/1 and stablemate Douglas Macarthur available at 12s.

Meanwhile, in the Northumberland Plate, Seamour has been smashed in to 11/2 and is closing in on 4/1 favourite Flymetothestars.

Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said: “We are laying our fair share on the front two in the betting, but Waldgeist is the one we are happy to take on and be top price about. We are not entirely convinced by the French Derby form, preferring Wings Of Eagles.

“When a 40/1 shot wins a race such as the Epsom Derby, people can think it is a fluke, but as far as we’re concerned he was an impressive winner and has Ryan Moore in the saddle on Saturday.”
