Sheffield Wednesday 5/6 to sign Newcastle man; 2/1 for Boro ace

Having missed out on promotion by the narrowest of margins last season, Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal is bidding to ensure his side achieve glory in the coming year.

And to do so, he’s targeting Newcastle United’s Grant Hanley and Middlesbrough’s Daniel Ayala.

Hanley was one of Blackburn Rovers’ top performers of recent years, but has hardly played since moving to Tyneside last summer, starting just five games in the Championship.

With game-time under Rafa Benitez even less likely with the Magpies back in the Premier League, he’s set for an exit, with Wednesday just 5/6 to secure the centre-back’s services this summer.

As for Ayala, the Spaniard may prove tougher to prise away from his current club, with the former Liverpool man playing a bigger part for his club last term.

However, with Boro under new management and back in the second-tier, a move to upwardly-mobile Wednesday could prove very tempting, with 2/1 on offer for the 26-year-old to head to Hillsborough before the transfer window closes.

There’s 9/2 on offer for the centre-back pair to both join the Owls this summer, and if that happens, the likes of Vincent Sasso or Glen Loovens could well look elsewhere for regular football.

Right now, the Owls are joint-fifth in the betting to win the Championship next season, at odds of 10/1. Improve their already-strong defence with either of this pair, and that could soon look like very good value indeed.
