Once 50/1, Jo Konta is now 8/1 second favourite to win SPOTY

We haven’t seen a female winner of Sports Personality of the Year since 2006, but punters are fancying male dominance to end this December.

That’s because Johanna Konta is second-favourite in the market.

The 26-year-old began the year as a 50/1 outsider, but her odds have been cut time and time again as punters have backed her to the hilt.

Those 50/1 odds were quickly eradicated after she claimed victory in Sydney in January, before a run to the Australian Open quarter-finals.

And they took another hit in April, when Konta landed her biggest success yet in the Miami Open.

She had to defeat Simona Halep, Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki to prevail in the sunshine state, making a big claim that she’s ready to win a Slam.

And if Konta can secure her first success at Wimbledon next month, she’ll give Anthony Joshua a major run for his money in the SPOTY race.

AJ is the 1/4 favourite following his stunning win over Wladimir Klitschko in April.

But AJ will find his odds ballooning should Konta win next month.

Konta is 7/1 third-favourite to win Wimbledon, and there’s a real belief that she can come become Britain’s first winner in the event since Virginia Wade 40 years ago.

She’s beaten most of her top-line rivals in the last 18 months, and this tournament will again be wide-open with Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova both absent.

Usually the annual fortnight festival which is Wimbledon is all about Andy Murray, but not this time.
