Odds slashed on Lampard being next Oxford United manager
Former Leeds United assistant Pep Clotet may still be favourite to take the Oxford United job, but there’s been an exciting new twist in the race for the U’s job, with odds of Frank Lampard taking the post slashed from 10/1 to just 3/1.
The former Chelsea and England midfielder hung up his boots in February 2017 after a glittering career in which he won 11 major honours and played at three World Cup finals, stating that his focus would be on gaining his coaching badges. And that hard work could soon pay off if Oxford give him the job this summer.
Admittedly he’s one of the less experienced men in the running, though Lampard did get a brief taste of life in the third tier during a loan spell with Swansea City during the early part of his career.
Although our odds-crunchers seem pretty sure the job will go to one of the above trio, they’re not ruling out Chris Powell at 8/1, with the 47 year old – who won this division as Charlton Athletic boss in 2012 – currently out of work.
There’s a big gap after Powell, with a trio of Steve Clarke, Alan Archibald and Steve McClaren next in the market at 20/1 apiece.
Ladbrokes News’ Dave Burin said: “We’re not ruling out Lamps’ arrival in League One next season, with the England legend now just 3/1 to take the reins at Oxford.”
“However, right now it’s Clotel who’s favourite to be giving the Pep talks for the U’s come opening day.”
