Middlesbrough targeting talented trio with Forest ace 2/1 to join

Published:

The clouds are lifting over the Riverside Stadium, with highly-rated boss Garry Monk replacing Steve Agnew earlier this month, following relegation from the Premier League.

But the new boss has lined up a trio of targets ahead of their bid to come straight back up – Nottingham Forest striker Britt Assombalonga, Manchester United stopper Sam Johnstone and Liverpool’s exciting young winger Sheyi Ojo.

It’s Assombalonga who looks the most likely to head to Teesside this summer at odds of 2/1, and there’s no doubt he’d be an excellent addition to their ranks at this level.

Despite missing a number of games in the early part of the season, he still managed 14 goals in 32 Championship outings, including a final-day double against Ipswich Town to secure the Reds’ second-tier status.

Next in the petting is Johnstone at 3/1, with the 24-year-old – loaned out nine times by the Red Devils – looking to leave Old Trafford permanently for the promise of regular first-team football.

Having proved a reliable custodian at this level with Aston Villa last season, he’d also be a pretty safe and sensible investment.

At 20-years-old, Ojo is a little more of an unknown quantity, but he’s extremely lively on the ball, and impressed during a 2015-16 loan stint with Wolverhampton Wanderers at this level.

He featured just twice for Liverpool’s first team last season, so it’s likely he’ll head elsewhere in 2016-17, most probably on loan. However, Boro are one of several clubs chasing his signature, with 9/2 on offer for the 20-year-old to head to the Riverside this season.
