Marin Cilic is the man to come through the melee and win Queen’s

We’re struggling to think of a more upset-laden Aegon Championships than the one we’ve witnessed this year.

Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka and Milos Raonic all crashed out on Tuesday in straight sets – a 3000/1 chance.

And Jo-Wilfried Tsonga followed suit on Wednesday, while Nick Kyrgios withdrew injured on Monday.

It means we’ll be left with no more than three seeds in the quarter-finals at Queen’s Club.

There’s a great chance for the likes of Donald Young and Giles Muller, but we’ve already picked out this week’s victor.

That’s Marin Cilic, who looks great value now at 5/2 to win the traditional Wimbledon warm-up.

And there’s several reasons why.

Firstly, the Croat is the last remaining seed in the Murray/Tsonga/Krygios half of the draw, and will now not face any seeded opponent until the final – and maybe not even then.

Secondly, the 2014 US Open champion has often gone well at Queen’s.

Cilic won this event in 2012, and was runner-up 12 months later.

Thirdly, his two most likely final opponents, Grigor Dimitrov and Tomas Berdych, are on course for a potentially gruelling semi-final.

And then, should either of that pair make it to the final, Cilic has the upper hand in the head-to-head records too.

The 28-year-old leads Dimitrov 3-1, and though it’s 6-6 with Berdych, Cilic has taken four of the last six clashes against the Czech ace.

It’s been a remarkably surprising tournament so far, but we’re expecting the seeds to come the fore from here on in.
