Introducing Alfredo Morelos…Rangers’ next goalscoring hero
We’re not sure when Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha has had time to sleep during the last fortnight, with a new signing seemingly landing at Ibrox every five minutes.
But the newest man touching down in Scotland to agree a deal for the club – Alfredo Morelos – is the most exciting arrival yet.
The 20-year-old is a player very much in the mould of Harry Kane – or, if we’re comparing him to a Gers favourite, an early-career Kenny Miller.
An absolutely lethal finisher, the Colombian has been on the books of Finnish heavyweights HJK Helsinki since early 2016 – first on loan, before being snapped up permanently from homeland club Independiente Medellin.
It’s fair to say he’s been a revelation since arriving in Europe, netting 26 goals in 37 games in his first season, before building on that total in 2017.
In the Finnish top-flight this term, he’s managed 14 goals in 12 outings, with the prolific hitman possessing both a knack for instinctive close-range finishes and an eye for the spectacular.
However, the youngster isn’t just a goalscorer.
He’s also an extremely tenacious player who isn’t afraid of a physical battle with defenders, though he is prone to picking up a swathe of bookings – something Caixinha will likely want to channel into a firm-but-fair style of play.
The youngster also possesses a decent engine, but more notably, it’s his reading of the game which makes him a huge asset in and around the box.
Morelos’ ability to find space sees him frequently score by pouncing on loose balls in the box and slotting past opposition keepers. Easy to spot as someone watching him, but almost impossible to spot as an opponent.
It remains to be seen how quickly he’ll slot into Scottish football, but with the above in mind, it would be no surprise to see the Gers new centre-forward hit the ground running.
Especially so with experienced, wily strikers like Miller and Martyn Waghorn to learn from, both in training and on the field.
Snatching second place back from Aberdeen next season is definitely looking more doable with players of Morelos’ quality joining Caixinha’s Rangers revolution.
