He’s already won major honours in England and Russia and captained his side at Euro 2016. And now it seems Martin Skrtel could be set to add his wealth of talent and experience to the Newcastle United ranks.

The 32-year-old has seen his odds of a reunion with his former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez at St James’ Park slashed from 8/1 to just 2/1, with the Magpies leapfrogging Swansea City (7/2) in the betting.

And our traders make it just even-money for the Slovakian to be snapped up by any Premier League outfit this summer.

Despite his advancing years, there’s little sign of the Handlova native’s quality diminishing. He was a key player for current club Fenerbahce last term, featuring 49 times – and chipping with three goals.

One thing which has concerned Newcastle fans in recent days are reports that Benitez could walk away from the club over issues regarding transfer policy.

However, our odds-crunchers reckon there’s every chance he’ll still be at the Magpies helm once next season begins, offering odds of 1/6 for Rafa to remain.

A Ladbrokes spokesperson said: “Newcastle fans could be set for two pieces of great news this summer, with Skrtel edging towards a Tyneside arrival, and Rafa set to continue his work in the Magpies’ resurgence.”
