In two months’ time, Everton’s centre-half pairing of Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams will have a combined age of 68.

So it’s no surprise to see the Toffees making a move for younger alternatives.

A number of reports in England and over in Italy claim Ronald Koeman is nearing a deal for AC Milan defender Gustavo Gomez.

The Paraguayan is only 24-years-old, and will bring plenty of energy to the Toffees ageing back-line.

And it’s believed Gomez will be a relative snip at just £8m.

He only joined the Serie A outfit last summer, but failed to land a regular starting spot at the San Siro.

Everton’s offer will also see AC reclaim the £7m they spent on Gomez 21 months ago, when they signed him from Argentinean side CA Lanus.

But he started just 11 times last season, while five of his 18 appearances were late cameos of 10 minutes or less.

Gomez can certainly expect more first team action at Goodison Park, especially with the Toffees entering this season’s Europa League.

And he won’t have long to wait either, with Everton’s Europa qualifiers set to kick off in late July.

While a deal for Gomez looks to be pretty straight forward, speculation continues to surround star man Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian claimed earlier this month that an agreement had been reached with a club, but has yet to reveal their identity.
