Burton Albion survived the drop by a single point during their first season in the Championship. And the Staffordshire outfit have given their hopes of surviving another campaign at this level a huge boost with the signing of Liam Boyce.

The 26-year-old was top scorer in the Ladbrokes Premiership last term, netting 23 times for Ross County – meaning he comfortably outscored prodigious talents like Moussa Dembele, Scott Sinclair and Adam Rooney.

A big game performer, he crucially netted in a memorable 2-1 defeat of Aberdeen, scored in County’s 2-2 draw against Celtic and struck all four goals in a derby day demolition of Inverness Caledonian Thistle at the end of April.

The tricky forward also proved himself a vital part of the Staggies’ build-up play, chalking up six assists during the last campaign, as well as eight during the 2015-16 season.

Unsurprisingly, that’s seen the Belfast native break into Michael O’Neill’s Northern Ireland squad, with Boyce netting his first international goal against New Zealand earlier this month.

That all bodes very well for Burton, and there’s an added bonus for Brewers’ fans in the form of a former Ross County teammate.

Boyce played alongside Jackson Irvine in Dingwall, and the Australian provided a slew of assists for his newly reunited teammate during the pair’s successful stint in the Highlands.

Add to that the fact that Burton’s primary problem last season was a lack of goal threat, with no player managing above 10 goals in all competitions, and it’s clear that Boyce is exactly the signing Nigel Clough needed to make.

Oh, and he cost a bargain £485k. A truly cracking piece of business.
