Bristol City make Signing of the Week with prolific Senegalese ace

Published:

Bristol City smashed their previous transfer record earlier this week with the signing of Famara Diedhiou from Ligue 1 outfit Angers for £5.3m. And judging by his time in France, the 24-year-old will be worth every penny and more.

The powerful Senegal international netted eight times during his first season in Ligue 1 last year, and regularly impressed against the division’s biggest names, netting the opener away at Monaco as well as scoring a clinical winner against Lille.

He was also instrumental in the club reaching the Coupe de France Final, the club’s first appearance at a major final in 60 years.

That year at Angers followed an outstanding 2015-16 campaign where he netted 21 times in Ligue 2 (seven more than anyone else managed) for Clermont Foot. In the process, Diedhiou proved himself a powerful aerial presence with the ability to hold the ball well, and a keen eye for goal.

No surprise then that he’s become a semi-regular fixture for national side Senegal, featuring for the Lions of Teranga.

At 24-years-old he’ll only improve at Ashton Gate, and though he’s a different kind of striker, his arrival will offset the loss of loanee Tammy Abraham, who heads back to parent club Chelsea after a 26-goal haul for the Robins last term.

Bristol City begin the coming Championship season with the visit of Barnsley, and our odds-crunchers make it 10/11 for the hosts to start the campaign with a victory.
