Aston Villa favourites for Man United keeper; Sunderland also keen

Published:

With Pierluigi Gollini back in Italy, Jed Steer out with a long-term cruciate injury and Mark Bunn little more than a solid back-up, Aston Villa fans may be concerned about their side’s options between the post.

But our traders make them 6/4 favourites to secure a permanent deal for Manchester United’s Sam Johnstone.

The 24-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Villa, managing an impressive eight clean sheets in his 21 Championship outings. And though the club ended the season in 13th spot, they boasted the best defensive record outside the top seven.

That was thanks largely to the Red Devils’ keeper’s impressive displays – but his solid performances have also seen the imposing goalie attract interest from a flurry of Premier League clubs.

Sunderland are currently 5/2 second-favourites, though if their much sought-after keeper Jordan Pickford exits this summer, those odds could quickly tumble.

They’re followed in the betting by 3/1 shots Watford, who are in need of a long-term replacement for 36-year-old Heurelho Gomes.

Leicester City are next up at 7/2, before a sizeable gap in the betting, with Stoke City 8/1 shots, and a move to either West Bromwich Albion or newly-promoted Huddersfield Town priced up at 16s.
