Arsenal legend shock favourite to take over Southampton hotseat

Southampton have been on the hunt for a new manager following Claude Puel’s dismissal. And it’s an unlikely contender who’s currently favourite for the job – former Arsenal star Patrick Vieira.
The 40-year-old is currently in charge of MLS outfit New York City FC, but it’s just 6/4 for the Frenchman to swap the Big Apple for the South Coast.
Despite being something of a gamble, the former Gunners ace has impressed Stateside, and with a strong knowledge of the Premier League, it could prove an inspired fit. But he’s far from the only potential appointment…
Former Liverpool assistant Mauricio Pellegrino is 13/8 to be the new man at St Mary’s, having left Spanish side Alaves after a very successful campaign in La Liga.
Frank de Boer is next up at 4/1, while current Reading gaffer Jaap Stam is 9/1 to make the step up from Championship to Prem.
However, while Stam’s former Manchester United teammate Ryan Giggs has been heavily linked with a number of managerial jobs, he’s a 20/1 outsider for the Saints post, alongside German pair Julian Nagelsmann and Thomas Tuchel.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Sudden interest in Vieira has blown this market wide open, but if the current odds are anything to go by, there’s every chance the Frenchman will be walking the Saints out on the opening day of the season.”
