West Ham United and Southampton in race for Juventus Serie A winner

West Ham have already announced the signing of one defender this week, and the Hammers have been linked with another.

Pablo Zabaleta has joined the club on a free from Manchester City, and now Juventus left-back Kwadwo Asamoah could be heading for the London Stadium too.

The 28-year-old won his fifth Serie A title with the Old Lady this season, but is very much a squad player.

Asamoah made just 15 league starts for the Turin outfit this term, and has featured in the Champions League on only three occassions.

There’s no doubting his experience and quality though, having featured over 120 times for Juve since 2012.

But his contract expires next summer, and it looks like the Italian giants are ready to cash in.

Valued at £9.3m, West Ham could land themselves something of a bargain.

Not many players of that valuation can count five Serie A titles, three Coppa Italias and three Supercoppa Italias on their honours list.

Asamoah has also made 69 appearances for Ghana, helping his nation finish second in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, and third in 2010.

Southampton are also reportedly keen on snapping up the left-back, who can play in centre midfield and left-mid too.

But it was the Hammers who endured major defensive issues this season, so it makes sense for the Irons to target those areas.

Zabaleta will bring plenty of experience at right-back, and the East Londoners will be in much-better shape should they snap-up Asamoah to do likewise at left-back.
