Rangers odds-on to add Portuguese prodigy to their ranks

Whether or not Rangers get a much-speculated deal for Bruno Alves completed remains to be seen, but it seems there’ll be at least one Portuguese defender at Ibrox this summer – with Fabio Cardoso just 4/5 to make the Gers his next club.

The centre-back came through the youth ranks at Benfica, before joining Vitoria Setubal last summer. And the 23-year-old has caught the eye at Estadio do Bonfim.

He featured 27 times during the past campaign, helping Vitoria to a respectable 12th placed finish in the top-flight, chalking up comfortably the best defensive record in the bottom half of the table.

The powerful and composed defender also played a vital part in the Setubal outfit’s run to the Semi-Finals of the League Cup, finding the net along the way.

Those displays have left Caixinha suitably impressed, and it’s believed he’s ready to stump up the asking price of around £1.75m to secure the youngster’s services.

With one of the Gers’ primary centre-backs – Clint Hill – parting company with the club this summer, there’s also a gap in the squad for a new centre-back, and with his best years surely ahead of him, now would seem the perfect time for Rangers to add Cardoso to their ranks.
