Premier League Darts: Can anyone stop MVG from going all the way?

Michael van Gerwen is going to take some beating in this year’s Premier League. Aside from one slip-up in Manchester against Raymond van Barneveld, few have managed to get near him.

Never has that been more evident than in the 7-0 hammering Adrian Lewis received at the hands of Mighty Mike last week in Birmingham.

The question is: can anyone stop him?

Recent form says no. Even when he’s come up against players throwing at their best, MVG has only lost one of his last 51 televised matches.

That’s across a whole host of formats, too. Short games like the Premier League as well as longer clashes like in the World Championships.

Long story short, his game is suited to any style. Slowing him down doesn’t work. Speeding him up only favours him. It’s rare opponents get into his head.

So does that mean you’re relying on him having an off day if you’re backing anyone else to win the Premier League?

How has the competition fared against the world number one?

MVG is quite rightly the clear 4/9 favourite to win his third Premier League Darts trophy in five years, while Peter Wright (9/2) to go all the way.

Snakebite has been in fine form since the turn of the year, and has actually met Van Gerwen five times already this year in recognised tournaments – losing 50% of those games.

He managed a draw in the Premier League earlier last month and defeated him in a UK Open Qualifier and the German Darts Championship.

However, more notably, Wright whitewashed the Dutchman 4-0 at the Cheltenham Masters in February, recording a 133.60 average. Does that give him a psychological advantage?

As for the rest of the competition, Gary Anderson (11/2) has struggled against MVG in recent months.

Granted, he did win their recent Players Championship clash in Wigan, but that’s his only victory in eight against the two-time world champ.

And that’s it as far as our traders are concerned.

Despite winning this competition on six previous occasions, Phil Taylor remains a 20/1 shot to go all the way in this – his last – Premier League campaign.

And even further back than that is Barney at 33/1, Adrian Lewis at 66s, Dave Chisnall at 125s and James Wade at 250s.
