Marco Silva new favourite to fill Watford vacancy, Slutsky 11/4

Marco Silva is the new 13/8 favourite to replace Walter Mazzarri as Watford manager when the season comes to an end – and it’s something we thought would happen right from day one.

When officials at Vicarage Road announced that they’d be parting ways with their current boss after Sunday’s game against Manchester City, our traders made Claudio Ranieri the early favourite, while Silva was out at 5/1.

But this always seemed like a strange position for Ranieri to take up, especially given the Hornets’ recent history with managers.

It’d be considered a huge risk to any manager in the game were he to take up the vacancy at the Hertfordshire outfit. Quique Sanches Flores led them comfortably to a mid-table finish and an Emirates FA Cup semi-final before being sent packing last season, while Mazzarri has kept them in the division for another year.

It’s not as if Watford are huge spenders either, which makes this a huge challenge for anyone.

But that’s a challenge we reckon Silva would be fit for. Since taking over at Hull City back in January, we’ve seen plenty to suggest that he’s got much more to give the Premier League, whereas it’s a big ask to expect him to return to the top-flight with the Tigers at the first time of asking – just ask Norwich City and Aston Villa.

Plus, we’ve seen the kind of contacts he has too – bringing in Inter Milan centre-half Andrea Ranocchia on loan alongside Poland international Kamil Grosicki on a three-and-a-half year deal.

Those are the kind of names that could certainly do a job at Vicarage Road in a full season, and the prospect of bringing in a name like Silva (who has the potential to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Mauricio Pochettino in terms of enjoying success in England) must be an exciting one for fans.

Meanwhile, former Russia manager Leonid Slutsky remains an 11/4 shot for the vacant post, although we think we know who supporters would rather have in charge if it was down to them…
