The Premier League season is barely a week old, yet Manchester City have already splashed out on their first big-money signing of the summer.

Monaco’s Bernardo Silva agreed a £43m five-year-deal with the Citizens yesterday, and now Pep Guardiola is targeting the winger’s team-mate.

Benjamin Mendy is next in line, and having agreed both Gael Clichy and Pablo Zabaleta to leave, the Etihad outfit are in need of full-backs.

Few come better than 22-year-old Mendy, who has shone for Monaco outfit this term.

The left-back made 25 league appearances, as the Principality outfit secured their first title in 17 years.

But the French side have plenty of cover at left-back, with Djbril Sidibe and Brazilian Jorge also at the club.

The signs were coming that Mendy might move as long ago as January, when Monaco spent £7m on the 21-year-old Jorge from Flamengo.

Mendy is valued at £7.65m by transfermarkt.co.uk, but with four years still to run on his contract, any transfer fee is to rise over £20m.

That will ensure Monaco make a quick profit, having laid out just £11m on the Frenchman from Marseille just 12 months ago.
