Leicester and West Brom head the market in race for Middlesbrough man

Published:

It’s been far from an impressive season for Middlesbrough with the North East outfit flopping on their return to the Premier League. and their inability to find the net on a regular basis eventually led to their immediate relegation from the top flight.

But it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Teessiders in this campaign. In fact, defensively, they were one of the better sides in the bottom half of the table.

Though that wasn’t all down to one man in particular, Ben Gibson certainly had a huge part to play for Boro.

The 24-year-old didn’t miss a single minute of Premier League football, and has even caught the eye of the likes of Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho throughout the campaign.

Now that he’s had a taste for the top-flight, it’s unlikely he’ll be all that keen on a return to the second tier of English football, which suggests he’d be open to a move away from the Riverside this summer.

And the latest odds are suggesting a move to the Midlands may be on the horizon.

But will that be the East or the West?

As things stand, Leicester City are leading the way at 9/4 to sign the centre-half, although West Brom are close behind them in the market at 5/2.

And both could certainly do with his services.

The Foxes were without captain Wes Morgan for almost a third of the season, and they struggled to replace him at the back. It’s also worth considering that by the time next season comes around, Leicester’s first choice centre-back partnership (Morgan and Robert Huth) will have a combined age of 66.

Fresh legs are a must.

The same applies to Albion, who will be looking to find a suitable replacement for 37-year-old Gareth McAuley as he looks set to play the last season of his career next time out.

It’s thought he’ll be used sparingly, meaning someone will need to come in and fill his boots.

Could that someone be Gibson?
