ITV Racing Tips: Diamonds can sparkle in the Ormonde Stakes

Ralph Beckett - Chester odds

We’ve already reached the final day of this year’s glorious Chester May meeting and we’re hoping to bring the curtain down in style.

The favourites had the best of the ITV Racing action on Thursday with our NAP Khairaat particularly impressive.

Unfortunately, Folkswood couldn’t get close enough to Deauville in the Huxley Stakes while the well-fancied Via Egnatia didn’t get the break he needed and failed to muster a significant challenge.

Lively Longshot The Anvil did bag us some place money in the Chester Vase though and we remain undeterred looking ahead to Friday’s fare.

Here’s how we’re calling it…

NAP – Rene Mathis – 13:50 Chester

This might seem like a bold NAP selection but we reckon it’s justified given the form shown by Richard Fahey’s runner last time out.

Paul Hanagan produced a peach of a ride to see off the smart Custom Cut at Thirsk, with the latter going on to take a Group contest at Leopardstown since.

El Hayem is a worthy rival and also benefits from a good draw but we’re going against the favourite and backing Rene Mathis to cause another upset.

NB – Bay Of Poets – 14:25 Chester

Aidan O’Brien’s Cliffs Of Moher is the easy pick on paper and he may well go on to secure another renewal success for a Ballydoyle team in flying form at present.

But we’re prepared to take a chance on Godolphin’s Bay Of Poets.

He’ll go from stall one and can make his presence felt if avoiding the same kind of trouble he encountered at Epsom last time out.

That outing in Surrey would’ve been good preparation for this assignment on the Roodee and we fancy this three-year-old to build on that run and deliver a bloody nose to the O’Brien hotpot.

Lively Longshot – Diamonds Pour Moi – 15:35 Chester

Continuing the theme of backing longshots in Chester’s feature contests we’re going to stick our necks on the line and plump for Diamonds Pour Moi.

The market could be informative here but away from any price moves our selection’s form offers enough to get us excited.

An easy win on debut was followed by a third in last year’s Cheshire Oaks, just a length behind Aidan O’Brien’s impressive Somehow.

The Raplh Beckett-trained filly was then pulled up in the Epsom Oaks by Oisin Murphy but did make a winning return when landing a French Listed contest last November.

Murphy is back in the saddle for this latest assault and we’re backing him to get the most from this talented four-year-old.
