Crystal Ocean slashed for both the Dante and the Derby

Published:

This year’s Derby market has been given a fresh lease of life following a sustained gamble on the Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt, Crystal Ocean.

We’ve slashed his Derby odds from 20/1 to 14/1 after punters latched on yesterday, while the three-year-old’s price for this week’s Dante Stakes at York has come in from 6/1 to 7/2.

Despite only having two career starts, posting one win in a Nottingham maiden last time out, the son of Sea The Stars is proving a popular Classic alternative to the market leaders.

The Aidan O’Brien pair of Churchill and Cliffs Of Moher still head up the Derby betting at 4/1 and 5/1 respectively.

But should Crystal Ocean do the business on the Knavesmire, expect to see him put more pressure on the antepost fancies.

Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said: “There has been a really interesting gamble for Crystal Ocean in both the Dante and the Derby, forcing us to cut his odds for both. If he wins the Dante well, we reckon he could possibly be the favourite for the Derby.”

Elsewhere, Rhododendron has been trimmed into 7/4 from 15/8 for the Oaks, while Sobetsu was cut to 8/1 from 25/1 after an impressive win in the Saint-alary Group 1 Stakes at Deauville.
