Chelsea and Liverpool interest sparks potential Southampton buy-back

Published:

Last summer was all about huge moves concerning some of the biggest attacking names on the planet. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba joined Manchester United while Sadio Mane and Gabriel Jesus signed for Liverpool and Manchester City respectively.

And that trend of big money move looks set to continue this summer, although early suggestions are that the Premier League’s top clubs will be looking at strengthening their defensive lines.

We reported yesterday that the Citizens were joint-favourites with Tottenham Hotspur to land Man United outcast Luke Shaw.

But reports linking Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand with a move to Chelsea or Liverpool have opened the door for the Saints to reunite with their former youth product.

Bertrand has been a key figure for the south-coast outfit this season, and such performances have led many to believe that a return to Stamford Bridge could be on the cards.

But, as has so often been the case over the last few years, Liverpool have been quick to snap up Southampton’s key men.

While those two look set to battle it out for the 27-year-old’s signature, that would leave the Saints in the market for a replacement.

Step forward, Luke Shaw.

A product of their youth setup, the Man United outcast would likely be welcomed back to St Mary’s with open arms, and it would allow the England international a chance to kick-start his career, having played in just 11 league games for the Red Devils since a horrific leg break back in 2015.

Given that he’s seemingly surplus to requirements in Manchester, it’s unlikely Southampton would have to pay anything near the £30m United parted ways with for his services back in 2014.

In fact, it’s probable they could immediately reinvest any money made on the potential sale of Bertrand by acquiring Shaw’s services.

But what do fans think? Would that be a decent deal for the Saints? Let us know in the comments section below!
