Championship play-off race remains too close to call

Published:

The play-offs often bring us some of the most spectacular and entertaining football of the entire season – but nobody has told the Championship contenders.

Huddersfield and Sheffield Wednesday’s tense 0-0 draw on Sunday followed Fulham and Reading’s slightly more entertaining 1-1 affair, as all four sides looked to keep things tight.

They certainly succeeded, and the odds emphasise how the quarter are all still in it.

Carlos Carvalhal’s Sheffield Wednesday are the slight favourites at 7/4, as they look to end a 17-year exodus from the Premier League.

Fulham – absent from the top-tier since 2014 – are next up at 2/1.

Some may find it surprising that the Cottagers are above opponents Reading in the betting, with the second-leg at the Madejski still to come.

But the West Londoners have created a fine talent for winning the big games away from home this term, having won at Wednesday, Huddersfield, title-winners Newcastle and Norwich.

The Royals are third in the market at 7/2, while Huddersfield, the only one of the quartet to have never played Premier League football, are outsiders at 4/1.

David Wagner’s side must claimed a result at Hillsborough to progress to the Championship play-off final – the richest game in football – but had the worst away record of the four sides in the regular campaign.
