Brechin, Alloa, Raith or Airdrieonians: Who’ll win Champ play-offs?

Published:

It is, in the words of Sir Alex Ferguson, “squeaky bum time” in the Ladbrokes SPFL, with four sides heading into the Championship play-offs looking to secure a spot in the second tier next term.

Alloa Athletic, Airdrieonians and Brechin City are all battling to win promotion, while for Raith Rovers, the aim is continuing their eight-year unbroken stay in the Championship.

So, who do the Ladbrokes News team fancy for glory?

Brechin City face Raith Rovers in the first Semi-Final, and you’d certainly have to fancy Darren Dods’ men in the first leg, at Glebe Park. Rovers have lost 11 away games in a row, while four of City’s last five victories have come at home.

However, Brechin are poor on the road themselves, while Raith have won four of their last five at Stark’s Park.

We’re expecting a home victory in each leg, and if push comes to shove, Raith’s big-game experience and recent upturn in form means we’d tip them to just about come out on top over the piece.

In the other semi, Alloa Athletic take on Airdrieonians – and the pair have been impossible to split on their Head-to-Head record this term, with two wins apiece from their four prior meetings.

But something’s got to give this time out…

And we think that the Diamonds will be outshone by the Wasps over two legs.

Alloa’s defence has looked impressive of late, while their opponents are still susceptible at the back – as April’s 2-1 defeat to lowly Stranraer highlighted.

There’s sure to be goals, with the likes of Airdrie’s Andy Ryan and the Wasps’ Greig Spence involved. But we think it’s Alloa who will edge an entertaining double-header.

And if they are to meet Raith in the Final – the showdown we think is most likely – then history says the Clackmannanshire club will triumph, having taken seven points from their last three meetings with the Rovers.

So our money’s on the 10/3 for Alloa to secure play-off glory and secure an immediate return to the second-tier.
