Traders price Birmingham specials after Redknapp appointment

Birmingham City have this morning appointed Harry Redknapp as manager following the departure of Gianfranco Zola after yesterday’s 2-0 defeat at home to Burton Albion.

And as a result of that shock announcement coming from St Andrew’s, our traders have been busy pricing up a number of specials surrounding the Blues.

Now just three points clear of the drop zone with an inferior goal difference to their relegation rivals, Birmingham’s form since the start of 2017 has been worse than 22 of the 24 sides in the Championship.

That’s seen their odds of dropping to the third tier of English football for the first time in 28 years fall to 7/2, despite finding themselves in and around the play-off spots for most of the first half of the season.

The Blues board will be hoping that Redknapp can stop the rot (as he has done so often in the past at numerous clubs), with the Midlands outfit having won just two of their last 22 league games.

And our odds-compilers are clearly fancying the former Tottenham Hotspur boss to turn things around at St Andrew’s, with 1/6 on offer for Birmingham to avoid the drop this time out.

As for whether or not the 70-year-old is here for the long haul, early reports are suggesting an initial contract expires at the end of this campaign.

But even with that in mind, we’re going 1/5 about Redknapp being in charge of the Blues on the opening day of next season.

And to kick things off, his first task will be to get one over bitter rivals Aston Villa in this weekend’s Second City derby. It’s 7/2 for Redknapp’s men to take all three points.
