Serena odds-on to never win another Slam after pregnancy news

Published:

Serena Williams hit us all with a forehand smash out of nowhere yesterday, with the news that she is 20 weeks pregnant.

It means the American will miss the remaining three Slams of the year.

And it also means that incredibly she was around eight weeks pregnant when she won the Australian Open earlier this year – and she didn’t drop a set!

Our traders have reacted to the news, and with Serena not expected to return to a Slam even until next year’s French Open at the earliest – by which time she will be nearly 37 – it’s 2/5 the woman widely regarded as the greatest of all time never wins another Slam singles title.

But of course, this is Serena we’re talking about, and it’s just 2/1 that she returns to win a 24th Slam tournament at some point in her career.

And at 5/1, who can say she won’t win two or more upon her return?

Williams is due this autumn, and whether the baby is a boy or girl – they’ve have Tennis in their genes.

With Serena and sister Venus claiming 30 Slam singles and 28 doubles titles between them, we go 20/1 his latest Williams prodigy wins a Slam of their own.

And the other major implication of the news is that it blows this year’s Slams wide open.

Reigning champion Garbine Muguruza is now 5/1 to defend her title at the French Open, with Simona Halep and Angelique Kerber next in the betting at 8/1.

But it’s at Wimbledon where Serena’s absence will be most keenly felt.

The American has won in SW19 for the last two years, and in total boasts seven success in south-west London.

Kerber now succeeds Serena at the head of the betting at 4/1, with Muguruza a 6/1 shot and Sharapova 8/1.
