Ricky Burns v Julius Indongo: Rickster can join list of boxing greats

Ricky Burns will step into the ring on Saturday night in front of a packed out arena at The SSE Hydro, Glasgow. And he’ll have the chance to add his name to the history books by unifying the super lightweight division.
In doing so, he’ll join a list of British boxers to have unified their respected divisions, including names such as Lennox Lewis, Joe Calzaghe, and David Haye.
Burns (41-5-1, 14KO) will head into the ring as the 1/2 favourite to make it three wins on the bounce in his hometown, while his opponent, Julius Indongo (21-0, 11KO) is a 13/8 shot to extend his undefeated record to 22.
This’ll be just his second fight away from home soil though, and the Namibian will have it all to do if he’s to win the Scottish crowd over.
But Rickster would be wise not to head into this bout thinking the job is done. Indongo caused a huge upset last time he stepped into the ring, winning by KO within a minute against the previously undefeated Eduard Troyanovsky.
The way he performed on that night, coupled with Burns’ inconsistency means we’re siding with the Blue Machine.
He’s taller than the Scot (5ft 10½in to 5ft 10in), he has a longer reach (71½″ to 70”) and his rounds-per-bout average is lower (5.3 to 7.6). With that in mind, we’d be leaning towards Indongo getting the job done before the final bell.
It’s also worth noting that three of Burns’ five defeats have come on home soil.
However, those fancying history to be made on Saturday night in Glasgow will see the 1/2 as cracking value.
