Man United favourites to sign Monaco’s star left-back

Monaco star Benjamin Mendy is set to be a man in demand this summer – and it’s Manchester United who lead the chase for his signature.

The left-back has shone on the French Riviera this season in both domestic and European affairs.

Aged just 21-years-old, Mendy has played 21 Ligue 1 games this term, in addition to five in the Champions League.

He’s helped Monaco storm towards a first Ligue 1 title in 17 years, while they take on Borussia Dortmund for a spot in the semi-finals in Europe.

And he’s been a major feature at the other end of the field too, producing a handy eight assists for his team-mates.

We make United 3/1 favourites to sign the defender, who is most likely set to be a direct replacement for the exiled Luke Shaw.

The Red Devils have also been linked with Barcelona ace Jordi Alba, but it wouldn’t be the first time the Old Trafford have snapped up a Monaco full-back, landing Patrice Evra in 2006.

But should Jose Mourinho go for the World Cup winnner this summer, then there could be plenty of value elsewhere in the Mendy market.

Manchester City are next at 5/1, with Chelsea priced up at 6s.

London duo Arsenal and Tottenham appear out of contention at 7/1 and 10/1 respectively.

Mendy began his career at Le Havre, making his senior debut in 2011, less than a month after turning 17.

Two solid seasons were enough to convince giants Marseille, who moved in 2013 to sign him up for £3m.

The left-back continued to impress during his three year stint at the Stade Velodrome, and Monaco came calling last summer with an £11m bid.

Valued at £7.65m by transfermarkt.co.uk, Mendy’s current deal runs until 2021.

But with his excellent performances this season causing a surge of demand, Monaco may struggle to keep hold of their star defender beyond the summer.
