Leicester v Atletico: Clinical visitors set for a low-scoring win

Published:

Even after last season’s title-winning heroics, few would have expected Leicester City to reach the Quarter-Finals of the Champions League.

But that’s where the Foxes continental dream looks set to end, against an Atletico Madrid side with an outstanding record away from home – and in this competition.

Los Colchoneros are unbeaten in their last 12 matches on the road, and have won four of the past six on their travels.

And they know full well how to navigate this stage of the UCL. Diego Simeone’s men have reached the final in two of the last three seasons, with Real Madrid the only side to beat them in the knockout stages since Porto in 2009.

That stands them in great stead against a Foxes side whose initial purple patch under Craig Shakespeare looks to be over following one point from their last two Premier League games.

So we fancy Atletico in the match betting at 21/20, while Leicester are priced up at 13/5 and there’s 21/10 on offer for the draw.

However, the best value in backing the visitors could lie elsewhere.

All of Atleti’s last five wins have seen Simeone’s men lead at the break, so the 12/5 for the La Liga giants to lead at half-time and win looks like an excellent selection.

As does the 11/2 for Los Colchoneros to beat the Foxes 1-0 once again. It’s a scoreline they’ve triumphed by on an incredible nine occasions already this term, including three of their last eight outings.

Finally, in the goalscorer markets, we’re tipping up a rather unconventional choice – but hear us out.

Atletico left-back Felipe Luis has found the net in three of the club’s last five games, and with Leicester surprisingly susceptible off set-pieces this term, we reckon the 17/2 for the Brazilian to net in the East Midlands looks very generous indeed.
