Celtic are champions – here’s this season’s three key moments

Victory over Hearts today secured Celtic the 2016-17 Ladbrokes Premiership title – and Brendan Rodgers’ men have done it in style!

The Bhoys are the earliest Premiership champions for 88 years, and have won 28 and drawn two of their 30 games – a sensational return.

And to celebrate Celtic’s success, we’ve taken a look back at three of the key fixtures from this stunning campaign…

Hearts 1-2 Celtic, August 7

Rodgers’ league bow as Celtic boss served up a potentially tricky trip to Tynecastle.

How would this new-look Bhoys side get on at Hearts? Would they drop points early on?

In an early indication that Rodgers’ had put together a side ready to conquer all, James Forrest put the visitors 1-0 up after just eight minutes.

As expected, the Jam Tarts rallied and levelled through a Jamie Walker penalty. But in a sign of things to come, Celtic’s perseverance and quality won out as Scott Sinclair bagged the winner nine minutes from time to get the Bhoys’ campaign up and running.

Celtic 5-1 Rangers, September 10

This was the game everyone homed in on when the fixture list was announced.

It was only Celtic’s fourth game of the league season, and defeat to their fierce rivals could have threatened to destabilise Rodger’s early tenure.

But in truth, this was barely a contest. Moussa Dembele bagged a famous hat-trick, while Scott Sinclair and Stuart Armstrong also netted as Celtic laid down their biggest marker yet.

It meant that after just four games, the Bhoys had a perfect 12 points from 12, and had hammered both Aberdeen and Rangers.

Aberdeen 0-1 Celtic, October 29

We’ve picked all three fixtures from early in the season, as that was when the real damage was done and the foundations laid for Celtic’s record-breaking year.

Having lost on both visits to Aberdeen last term, there was plenty of attention on Dembele and co as they made the trip north at the end of October.

But in a true test of their credentials, the Bhoys again came through with flying colours.

Tom Rogic bagged the only goal of the game, and it all meant that by the end of October, Celtic already had a nine-point lead with a game in hand and had beaten Aberdeen twice.

Even by that stage of the year the Hoops had one hand on the title.
