West Ham keen on snapping up experienced Man City defender

West Ham United could be set to add experience to their patchy backline this summer, without spending a penny in transfer fees. That’s the word anyway, with reports suggesting Slaven Bilic has his sights set on Manchester City’s Bacary Sagna.

The experienced Frenchman has struggled to retain a starting spot at right-back this season, and with Pep Guardiola seemingly set to bring in a host of new recruits this summer, it seems the 34-year-old – whose contract ends in June – will be on his way.

As far as the Hammers are concerned, the former Arsenal ace could be exactly what they need.

Alvaro Arbeloa’s time in east London has been hampered by injuries, and his fellow right-back Sam Byram is still learning the ropes in the Premier League, meaning Sagna’s pedigree at this level could make him an excellent acquisition.

And there’s no doubt he’s still a player with plenty of talent. Guardiola has kept the faith with Sagna for most of City’s biggest games this season – including their 5-3 Champions League demolition of Monaco.

Meanwhile, the veteran has also continued to star for France, playing every minute of the Euro 2016 campaign in which Les Blues reached the final.

That’s not to deny that Sagna’s best days are behind him, but with a solid defensive presence and a knack for creativity – having set up goals in multiple competitions this season – there’s no doubt he’d be a very savvy acquisition on a free transfer.

For now though, Bilic’s immediate focus will be on the Irons’ visit to Bournemouth on Saturday.

It’s 7/4 for the hosts to win at the Vitality Stadium. And having won by a two-goal margin on their last pair of visits here, the 15/2 for West Ham to win by 2 goals here.
