Merseyside sports fans are in for a treat this weekend with both Liverpool and Everton involved in cracking fixtures and Tony ‘The Bomber’ Bellew set to go toe-to-toe with David Haye.

As a man with his ear to the ground in this part of the world I know just how much punters are looking forward to the action.

And ahead of proceedings, here are my thoughts on all things red and blue.

Bring it on…

Klopp is starting to feel the heat

Jurgen Klopp took all the plaudits in the first half of the season, so it’s it’s only fair that he receives criticism when all is not going to plan.

I think it’s a little premature to start looking at markets on the next Liverpool manager. But he is under severe scrutiny at the moment.

Ex-players and supporters have been quite vocal is his inability to change tack, having no plan B and not being able to adapt his system when playing against so-called lesser teams.

There were some Liverpool supporters offering up a lack of rest in between matches in January as a justification for poor form.

That didn’t stack up on Monday night though, as the Liverpool squad had enjoyed a 16-day rest while training in the warmer climes of La Manga.

On the flip side, Leicester City had played three matches in three different competitions while Liverpool had their feet up.

Looking at Liverpool’s squad you’d have to say that where the team sit in the league is probably about right. Hindsight is a great thing but one or two nw faces in January may have given them a lift.

Everton can chase the dream and look to overhaul the Red Men

Top four is a dream for Everton but anything above seventh will be a more than a satisfactory campaign for Ronald Koeman in his debut season at L4.

It’s in their own hands if they want to chase that dream – they’ve still got to play Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, as well as Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.

With Man United lifting the EFL Cup last weekend, the chances of European football being played at Goodison Park next season are enhanced.

And if you’d have offered any Evertonian that this time last year, they’d have bitten your arm off!

Value lies in Liverpool this weekend

Everton have taken points from Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal this season, so you’d be a fool to rule them out from picking something up from their visit to White Hart Lane.

However, I think the value lies with Liverpool at 21/20.

Yes, they are in a slump but their home record this season is impressive.

Only Chelsea have scored more home goals than Klopp’s men this campaign.

And when Arsenal meet Liverpool it guarantees one thing – goals.

An incredible 37 goals have been scored in the last nine fixtures between the two sides – an average of 4.1 goals per game.

So, having a punt on over 3.5 goals (13/8) is where it’s at.

It could get messy with Moss in charge

Referee Jon Moss dishes out more cards than Clintons! He’s averaging over 4.3 cards per game, more than any other official.

Add to that, he’s in charge of Watford (Bottom of the Fair Play League, 63 yellow cards – highest in the Premier League) v Southampton.

Wager a few bob on the booking points.

Back Bellew to take Haye all the way

David Haye has only gone past five rounds once since 2010 and that was his defeat to Wladimir Klitschko in 2011.

So, you’d expect the longer the fight goes on, the more Tony Bellew will fancy his chances.

Let’s put it this way, I’ve seen better 1/6 shots than David Haye.

Bellew has a much better chance than the odds suggest.
