QUIZ: Who am I? Can you guess these surprise England goalscorers?

If we were to ask you to name eight players who’ve scored for England in the last 20 years, it’d be easy, right?
That’s too obvious a quiz though, so we’re going to make it a tad more difficult for the brainy readers of Ladbrokes News.
We’ve put together a list of eight surprise goalscorers for the Three Lions since 2002. We’ll tell you the team they scored against, and give you a bit of backstory for each player.
One more clue, none of these players featured for the senior team more than 15 times.
Ready to test yourselves? We’ll start off with an easy one…
- 1. My goal-per-game ratio at international level is up there with the best players in world football, averaging one strike every time I stepped out in an England shirt. OK, it might have been just once against Andorra, but what’s my name?
2. My international record is exactly the same as the player above. One game, one goal. Interestingly, a certain Wayne Rooney made his England debut in the same game as me. Only one of us got on the scoresheet against Australia though, and it wasn’t Wazza.
3. I don’t deserve to be on this list, as injuries have held me back. The Ladbrokes News team were more surprised with the fact I’ve only played nine games though, and that’s why I’m here. Still, two goals isn’t bad – with my first coming against Ghana. What’s my name?
4. I took part in a great escape, I won a Premier League, and I have eight England caps to speak of. As debuts go, you don’t get much better than mine – I scored a brace against USA.
5. I’ll be impressed if you get me. I made my debut for England back in 1996 while playing for Aston Villa, but didn’t score for another five years. On that day, Michael Owen and Raul were on the pitch – yet I found the net and they didn’t. Who am I?
6. You can find me on Match of the Day now, and I’ve every right to give my opinion, as I’ve represented my country nine times. It should have been more, too – but an injury prevented me from making England’s 2002 World Cup squad. I managed to score against Paraguay earlier that year though.
7. I played 13 times for England over six years, and after spending plenty of time away from the squad, I was re-called by an interim boss and an old friend of mine. My first and only goal for my country came against Israel at Wembley. Not bad for a 19-year-old defender.
8. And on the subject of defenders, plenty of eyebrows were raised when a Premier League manager signed me on loan last year. I don’t know why though because I netted in my only game for England. A Steven Gerrard free-kick landed perfectly at my feet to make it 2-1 to us against Sweden. BOOM.
