Phoebe Waller-Bridge new fav for Doctor Who role after flurry of bets

Published:

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the new even-money favourite to be the next Doctor Who, following a flurry of bets on Monday evening placed on the Fleabag and Broadchurch star.

Having been considered an 8/1 outsider last night, she’s now ahead of long-time favourite Kris Marshall, whose odds have drifted slightly from 6/4 to 3/1 overnight.

Waller-Bridge finds herself on the BAFTA Breakthrough Talent shortlist, which helps explain why so many have lumped on her to succeed outgoing Time Lord Peter Capaldi.

This is just the latest twist in a market which has so far had several frontrunners – both male and female – although this is the shortest price any female has been to get the role.

And she’s well ahead of Broadchurch pal Olivia Colman who, despite being as short as 4/1 back in February, is now a 12/1 shot.

Tilda Swinton has also headed this market at one stage, although she’s been on the drift of late too, and now finds herself out at 10/1.

That means Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s nearest rivals are Kris Marshall and David Harewood (5/1)
