Lukaku or Morata? Chelsea have a huge decision to make

Published:

Things are looking pretty rosy for Chelsea right now, as the Blues canter towards the Premier League title. But boss Antonio Conte faces a crucial summer ahead.

The Italian may have got more out of Diego Costa than any other manager could, but reports continue to link the fiery Spaniard with a mega-bucks move to China.

And should that happen, Chelsea will have to move fast to find a suitable replacement.

With Champions League football imminent, the Blues are preparing to spend big this summer in a bid to land another European success, to add to their famous victory over Bayern Munich in 2012.

But that can’t be done without top quality up front.

So who will Chelsea target should Costa move on?

Some sections of the press seem confident that the man in question is Romelu Lukaku.

But others say it’s Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata.

It’s highly unlikely Chelsea will sign both. So which one will they go for?

There’s certainly a case to be made for both the Belgian and Spaniard.

Lukaku is enjoying his best year yet at Everton, and looks set to land this season’s Premier League Golden Boot accolade.

The Toffees’ marksman has netted 21 times this term, but it’s the six assists which will pique Conte’s interest.

For all of Costa’s goal-scoring prowess, it’s his link-up play which has allowed Chelsea to shine this season.

That has been a question mark of Lukaku’s game in recent years, but now the Everton star has developed those qualities.

And the powerhouse forward is still only 23.

But the Belgian is unlikely to be available for less than £60m, and has yet to truly shine in big games, which is where Morata might come in.

The Spaniard has again been left out in the cold by Real Madrid this season, starting just nine games for Zinedine Zidane’s side.

But the 24-year-old has still managed to score eight times and supply three assists in La Liga.

And despite averaging just 23 minutes of game time from seven appearances in the Champions League, Morata has bagged three goals in Europe.

Having scored 12 goals and set-up 12 assists on-loan at Juventus last season however, Morata has proven his qualities in a division and with a club Conte knows intimately.

The Spaniard fired in the winner in last season’s Coppa Italia final too, while goals versus local rivals Torino and old foes Inter prove he turns up for the big games.

And in 2014-15, Morata netted in both legs of the Champions League semi-final for Juve against parent club Real, before bagging in the final versus Barcelona.

It remains to be seen who Chelsea go for, but we reckon it’s pretty good dilemma to have.
