Liverpool leading the way in race for Fulham’s latest prodigy

At last, it seems there’s genuine interest from Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool in an out-and-out left-back. Unfortunately for Fulham though, they could be about to lose one of their key players for the future.

Step forward, Ryan Sessegnon.

Aged just 16 (yep you read that right), Sessegnon already has 18 Championship appearances to his name.

And two assists.

And four goals.

With that in mind, it’s no surprise that some of England’s top clubs are on red alert.

But as things stand, it’s the Merseyside outfit that lead the way for the youngster’s signature at just 7/4.

Coincidentally, the last player to move to Anfield from Craven Cottage was Paul Konchesky – another left-back – in August 2010. Ryan Sessegnon was 10 years old back then, just let that sink in!

An inconsistent Alberto Moreno has forced Klopp into fielding James Milner on the left-hand side of his back four for the majority of the season, despite the German boss having had plenty of time both in the summer and in the January transfer window to add to his ranks.

He’s kept the faith though, but it finally looks as though he’s planning for the future – and Sessegnon’s arrival is likely to cost the Reds plenty.

However, from what we’ve seen, it’s likely he’ll prove to be worth every single penny.

He’s played a significant role in the Cottagers’ campaign so far, and yesterday’s brace away at league leaders Newcastle United means his side are still well in the race for a play-off spot.

And having begun the season as an out-and-out full-back, he’s proving just how versatile a player he is, having featured further forward for Fulham in recent weeks.

Almost Gareth Bale-esque, Sessegnon’s versatility, coupled with his sweet left foot, makes for an exciting potential signing for any club.

And of course, that means we’re not ruling out Bale’s current side, with Real Madrid just an 8/1 shot to take the youngster to the Bernabeu, while their La Liga rivals Barcelona are available at 9s.

But back in the Premier League, Chelsea and Manchester City are unsurprisingly in the running at 3/1 and 5/1 respectively.

Both Antonio Conte and Pep Guardiola would feel the 16-year-old could adapt to their approaches with relative ease, but if we’re looking at who perhaps needs his services most, then it’d have to be Liverpool.

What do fans think about the latest odds? Should Liverpool pay anything they can to secure a deal? Or should Fulham do everything in their power to keep him? Of course, a deal to satisfy both parties could see Sessegnon sign for the Reds and be returned immediately to his current club on a loan deal for more experience – but would Klopp be able to afford to do that?
