Lincoln City v Forest Green Rovers: Winner should go on to take title
With no Premier League or Championship action to look forward to this weekend, and with England not playing until Sunday evening, our attention on Saturday turns to the National League, where there’s a potential title decider taking place.
Lincoln City will welcome league leaders Forest Green Rovers to Sincil Bank, and we’re putting our necks on the line by saying the winner of this clash will go on to lift the trophy in May.
The Imps are currently three points off FGR, although they have three games in hand over their title rivals following their incredible Emirates FA Cup run.
But were the visitors to nick all three points here, they’d be some six points ahead of Lincoln, and it would mark five games without a win for the hosts which would be their worst run this season – at arguably the most crucial time of the campaign.
However, a win for the home side will see them go level on points with Forest Green at the top of the table, with a chance to stretch nine points clear by the time they’ve played their games in hand. So their motivation will be simple – a win puts them back in first-place on goal difference.
No wonder they’re 2/5 favourites to win the title.
But it’s Mark Cooper’s men who’ll head into this one with a massive psychological advantage over their opponents, as they’ve lost just two of their last nine meetings with Lincoln in all competitions.
In that time they’ve scored an impressive 20 goals to Lincoln’s 11, and they boast one of the deadliest strikers in the division in Christian Doidge.
The Welshman has netted 22 goals so far this season, including 13 in the league since the turn of the year.
He scored in the 3-2 defeat to Lincoln earlier on in the season, and 7/5 says he manages to find the net again in the reverse fixture.
Meanwhile, the hosts will be hoping Matt Rhead can add to his tally this season, although he’s scored just two league goals in 2017. With that in mind, we’d be steering clear of the 9/2 on offer for him to open the scoring, and instead we reckon the Imps may end up relying on Peterborough United loanee Lee Angol.
The 22-year-old netted a hat-trick in his Lincoln debut earlier this month, and he’s favourite to get on the scoresheet in this match at 11/8.
It’s also worth remembering that this is a Lincoln City side who held their own for 45 minutes against one of the best teams in the country in Arsenal just two weeks ago.
Surely they’ll be able to use that experience to their advantage, won’t they?
One thing’s for sure, this is undoubtedly the game of the day, and we wouldn’t miss it for the world.
