Gary Rowett early favourite for Derby County post after McClaren exit

For the second time in his managerial career, Steve McClaren has been sacked by Derby County. The news broke following a dreadful run of form which has seen the Rams win just one of their last nine league games.

As a result, the East Midlands outfit have slid down to 10th in the table, and a play-off spot is looking increasingly unlikely.

So with McClaren out, who are the early frontrunners?

Former Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett has taken his time getting back into management and has been waiting for the right opportunity. And that may well come in the shape of Derby County – at least that’s what our traders are suggesting.

Rowett played more games for Derby than any other club, and the potential homecoming would certainly be appealing to plenty of fans – who’ll be glad to see him head the market at just 4/6.

The current vacant post at Norwich City seems to be attracting some of the bigger names currently out of work.

And while Alan Pardew remains favourite to take over at Carrow Road, he’s an 8/1 shot for the Derby job.

Ahead of him in this market is Darren Wassall at 5/1. Currently Derby’s academy manager, it’s likely he’ll get the job if it ends up going to someone internal.

Ex-Rangers gaffer Mark Warburton is considered an outsider for the role at 10/1. But he’s just ahead of Ryan Giggs, who is yet to take his first step into management.

The Manchester United legend is 12/1 for the vacancy, a price he shares with former England and Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson.

Meanwhile, Alex Neil is just behind that pair at 14/1, while 20/1 says Nigel Clough follows in his father Brian’s footsteps and takes over the hot seat.
