England’s five greatest wins at the New Wembley

This June will mark 10 years since England returned to their revamped Wembley stadium. So we fancy we’d look back at some of the Three Lions’ greatest wins at under the famous arch.

England have played over 50 times since moving back into north west London, and have taken on everyone from Brazil and Germany, to Estonia and San Marino.

There have been many memorable wins in that spell, but we’ve picked out five of the best…

England 3-0 Russia, September 12, 2008

England positively dominated Russia, and a Michael Owen double ensured the game was all but won by the interval.

Rio Ferdinand added to the scoreline late on, and the result was made even more impressive when this same Russia side then went on to reach the Euro 2008 semi-finals.

England 5-1 Croatia, September 9, 2009

Still mindful of Croatia’s infamous 3-2 win two years earlier, England were in a vengeful mood in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.

Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard put Fabio Capello’s side 2-0 to the good inside 20 minutes, before the pair teamed up again with a goal apiece in the second half.

Former Arsenal man Eduardo pulled one back for the visitors, before Wayne Rooney rounded off a resounding victory as England took one giant step towards South Africa.

England 1-0 Spain, November 12, 2011

Seven games unbeaten, England welcomed Spain to Wembley for an Autumn friendly.

At the time, the visitors were reigning two-time European Champions and had finally claimed the World Cup in South Africa.

But the Three Lions matched the super Spaniards. This was a full-strength Spain side too, featuring David Villa, Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Cesc Fabregas, Gerard Piquet and Jordi Alba to name but a few.

In a finely-balanced encounter, that man Lampard netted just after the half-time to do the business for England.

England 2-1 Brazil, February 6, 2013

England were undeterred as they hosted a star-studded Brazil four years ago.

The five-time World Cup winners boasted the magical duo of Neymar and Ronaldinho, but they couldn’t get beyond England’s back-line.

Joe Hart, Chris Smalling, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson kept things tight at the back, as goals from Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard secured England a fine victory.

England 3-2 Scotland, 14 August 2013

Matches versus the Auld Enemy are always entertaining, but this clash was particularly so.

A vibrant Scotland twice went ahead through James Morrison and Kenny Miller, but Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck ensured England were soon level on each occasion.

But with 20 minutes to go, the game was won for England via an unlikely hero.

Southampton striker Rickie Lambert nodded home the winner with his very first touch in international football.
