Philip Hammond - Budget odds

This year’s Budget speech is on the horizon and in time-honoured tradition we’ve compiled a list of the key stock phrases and words you can expect to hear from Philip Hammond.

Yes, while the Chancellor of the Exchequer readies himself for the big reveal, our political odds guru has been pretty busy too.

But where does the value lie in this year’s edition of Budget Buzzword Bingo?

You won’t get rich backing ‘NHS’ at 1/10 or ‘Brexit’ at 1/3 although those odds suggest both buzzwords are likely to feature.

‘China’ and ‘Northern Powerhouse’ are two other odds-on shots at 1/2 apiece while ‘Trump’ at even-money offers a little more bang for your buck.

Further down the list, ‘Tax Avoidance’ and ‘Tax Returns’ (both 2/1) seem like smart selections with staple phrase ‘Hard Working Families’ also likely to attract interest at 3/1.

Meanwhile, ‘Make Britain Great Again’ is available at 33/1 and the buzzword phrase of the moment, ‘Fake News’, is a 20/1 shot.

Oh, and don’t forget to keep your eyes as well as your ears open throughout proceedings.

Why? Because not only are we pricing up the colour of the Chancellor’s tie (Blue is your 1/2 favourite), we’ve also brought back an old favourite.

Despite being stung in 2011, we’re putting up Ken Clarke to fall asleep during the speech at 16/1.
