Who’s the outsider being backed to pip Emma Stone to a BAFTA?

Following the success of ‘La La Land’, many have seemingly written off the possibility of anyone other than 1/3 favourite Emma Stone winning the Best Leading Actress award at the BAFTAs. But some punters think she could be usurped by Natalie Portman.
The 35-year-old won the gong for her performance in Black Swan back in 2010, and now finds herself nominated once again for her stirring performance as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in Pablo Larrain’s biopic ‘Jackie’.
So, will Portman’s display as the First Lady make her the leading lady at this weekend’s BAFTAs? With Golden Globe winner Isabelle Huppert not among the nominees, it’s certainly a winnable field.
History suggests that 3/1 shot Portman also has the edge on Stone with the subject matter of her fine performance.
The vast majority of former BAFTA winners in this category have starred in drama films – as opposed to comedies – including each of the last two winners, Julianne Moore (Still Alice) and Brie Larson (Room).
All that has led one high-rolling punter to put £300 behind Portman winning the prize – but the biggest windfall could be for those backing 25/1 shot Emily Blunt.
The 33-year-old provided a captivating turn in Tate Taylor’s adaptation of ‘The Girl on the Train’, and finds herself the third-most backed selection in the market.
Meanwhile, there’s 20/1 on offer for six-time nominee Amy Adams to finally bag a BAFTA for her role in ‘Arrival’, while the evergreen Meryl Streep is a 25/1 shot to repeat her feat of 2011, when she won this award for her role in ‘The Iron Lady’.
