Sutton United v Arsenal: Can the U’s pull off the greatest shock?

| 19.02.2017

It’s the fixture of Emirates FA Cup dreams – it’s National League Sutton United at home to Premier League giants Arsenal in the Fifth Round. And we’re all asking the same question – will we see the greatest cup shock of all time?

We could go long into the night highlighting the gulf in size between these two clubs, but simply put, no side has ever played Champions League football against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena and Sutton United at Gander Green Lane in succession.

Boss Paul Doswell has made clear in the run-up to the game that the prize money gained from this season’s amazing run will go straight into improving the club facilities. Things like new bulbs for the floodlights, fixing leaking roofs – that sort of thing.

The National League outfit have – along with Lincoln City – become this season’s Emirates FA Cup heroes, and victory here would surely be the great upset in the competition’s history.

And before the weekend we offered 200/1 on both Lincoln and Sutton progressing into the last-eight, and after the result at Turf Moor, we’re halfway there.

Sutton are 14/1 to complete the double surprise, but the Imps were a similar price when they defeated Burnley on Saturday.

A sell-out 5,000 fans will watch the U’s take on Arsene Wenger’s men.

The Premier League outfit are understandably 2/11 favourites, and Sutton’s excellent 3G pitch may play into the Gunners’ hands.

But having come off a dismal night in Europe last week, a tense atmosphere lingers around the Emirates outfit, while their hosts have lost just one of their last 17 on their home patch.

That should offer plenty of hope to Paul Doswell’s men, and a Sutton/Draw Double Chance is 9/2.

It’s 11/10 that both teams find the net, while 28/1 says that Sutton win and both teams score.

Wenger has stated he will put out a normal team, but it remains to be seen whether superstar duo Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil make the trip to south-west London.

We can probably expect Olivier Giroud to feature, and the Frenchman is 13/5 to net first.

It’s probably not the sort of fixture Lucas Perez signed up for, but the Spaniard is also likely to get some game-time, and is 10/3 to open the scoring.

Arsenal will have to keep on eye on Matt Tubbs though, with the 32-year-old boasting over 230 career goals.

Tubbs is no stranger to an FA Cup underdog story, being part of the Crawley side which almost knocked out Manchester United six years ago.

The former Bournemouth striker is 14/1 to score first and 7/2 anytime, while third-round scorer Roarie Deacon is 16/1 to break the deadlock and 4/1 anytime.
