Sheffield United odds-on favourites for table topping clash with Scunthorpe

Published:

While most eyes will be focusing on the Emirates FA Cup fixtures this weekend, there’s an almighty clash in League One, where table-topping Sheffield United host second-place Scunthorpe United.

It’s a fixture which could go a long way to deciding who wins this season’s third tier, and with it, a priceless piece of silverware.

The Blades know they could go eight points clear at the top with just 14 games remaining, while victory for the visitors at Bramall Lane would close the gap to two.

But with one point in nine, Graham Alexander’s Irons have gone off the boil at the wrong time, and we make them 9/2 outsiders for victory in the Steel City.

The visitors also know the pressure is on, with Bolton just two points behind them – and boasting a game in hand.

United are 8/13 favourites, and having won 11 of their 15 home games this term, that looks good value.

The two sides shared a 2-2 encounter at Glanford Park in September, and we like the look of both teams to score again at 4/5.

The Yorkshire outfit may have kept three clean sheets heading into this weekend’s clash, but they conceded 11 in five games during a leaky January.

And Scunthorpe are the division’s second-highest scorers on 57, one behind their hosts.

Plus, with the league’s top-two strikers sharing the same pitch, 0-0 seems highly unlikely.

The Blades’ Billy Sharp leads the way on 20 for the campaign, and the former Doncaster ace is 14/5 favourite to net the opener against the club where he made his name ten years ago.

Scunthorpe’s best hopes will rest on 18-goal hitman Josh Morris, who is 5/1 to net first.

But whichever way this game goes, you can be sure it will have big implication for this season’s League One title race.
