Saturday’s Racing Tips: We’re sticking to our guns at Sandown

The relentless search for Cheltenham Festival clues continues this weekend with some intriguing action coming our way from the likes of Musselburgh, Sandown and Wetherby.

A total of seven contests will be shown live by ITV Racing this Saturday. And for the purposes of our latest tipping column, the Grade 1 Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase, Betfred Masters Handicap Chase and the Edinburgh National will provide the main focus.

Two out of three of our primary tips came in last week (Un De Sceaux and Unowhatimeanharry) and we’re confident of producing a similar strike-rate here.

Regular readers are sure to recognise a few familiar names…

NAP – Clan Des Obeaux – 14:25 Sandown

This horse may have been touched off at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day but we don’t think he lost too much in defeat.

Clan Des Obeaux made quite an impression when he hacked up at Newbury’s Hennessy meeting prior to that defeat and we think he’s worth taking another chance on here.

Nicky Henderson’s Whisper got the better of Paul Nicholls’ Obeaux last time out but we can’t see his Top Notch repeating that particular dose.

Le Prezien and Baron Alco also have claims but probably not enough to trouble the selection in the Scilly Isles.

NB – Beg To Differ – 15:35 Sandown

Beg to Differ was our Lively Longshot for the Welsh National and certainly impressed when bagging a place at Chepstow.

Now Jonjo O’Neill’s charge is a big fancy for this hot handicap and rightly so given his recent performances and a course and distance win last year.

The improving seven-year-old had the re-opposing Loose Chips in behind that day and it’s hard to see a role reversal.

Otago Trail is no mug but can be hard to predict while Rock the Kasbah and Irish Saint are best of the rest.

Lively Longshot – Itstimeforapint – 14:05 Musselburgh

The inaugural running of the Edinburgh National has attracted some decent entrants with Grand National veteran Alvarado aiming to earn another shot at Aintree.

Fergal O’Brien’s 12-year-old certainly has the experience but we’re looking past that and instead focussing on the potential of Itstimeforapint.

We agonised about this week’s choice of Longshot with Azure Fly also fancied.

However, Lucinda Russell’s entrant has won at this track, has placed on his last three starts, and still looks as if he’s got more to offer over a trip like this.
