Prem update: Middlesbrough continue to slide, WBA on course for best finish

Chelsea’s win against Swansea ensured they kept a healthy distance between themselves and their title rivals at the top of the Premier League table. And in truth, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that the trophy will be heading anywhere other than Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.

But even with that in mind, there’s still plenty for us to keep an eye on over the coming weeks and months.

Of course, there’ll be plenty of attention on Leicester City, as they continue to slide down the table and into the relegation zone. Granted, they have a game in hand over their rivals at the bottom, but we can’t see the Foxes taking anything from their clash with Liverpool tomorrow evening.

However, while Leicester are finding themselves well and truly in a relegation scrap, so too are Middlesbrough.

Despite a fairly solid start to the campaign, Boro have struggled for points of late. And although they’re currently in 16th place with a relatively healthy goal difference, they’re just three points ahead of bottom-side Sunderland.

Winless in the league since mid December, there could prove to be some value in the 10/11 on Boro going down.

Aitor Karanka is under serious pressure to pick up points in the next few weeks, and failure to do so will likely spell the end of his time at the Riverside Stadium.

Things aren’t looking so worrying at the Hawthorns though as West Bromwich Albion recorded their 11th win of the season yesterday, and find themselves comfortably in eighth place

It’s been a remarkable campaign for the club so far, headed by a manager in Tony Pulis whose job was under pressure at the start of the season.

There was talk surrounding his exit before a ball was kicked in the summer, but Baggies fans must now be delighted that such talk was rubbished.

This is the Black Country outfit’s seventh consecutive season in the top-flight, and they’re well on course to make it their most successful one yet.

The form of Everton in seventh means it’s unlikely West Brom will be able to finish above the Toffees this year to record their best ever finish in a Premier League campaign. But they’re just nine points away from recording their best ever points tally.

And with 12 games still to play, they should smash their current record of 49, which would stand them in good stead to perhaps push on for a Europa League spot next time out.
