Odds suggest Liverpool could be set to lose two key stars this summer

Published:

It was all looking so promising. Liverpool were flying high in the Premier League, just six points behind leaders Chelsea, having scored more goals than any other side in the division, with just two defeats to their name after 19 games.

Since then though, it’s all gone downhill for Liverpool.

They’ve won just one of their last seven league games, have slid down to fifth in the table and find themselves in a serious fight to get back into a Champions League spot.

In fact, things are so bad, that fans are even beginning to turn on Jurgen Klopp.

But if they don’t turn things around sharpish, they run the risk of losing two of their key players in Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino.

And those two have this morning been priced at 3/1 and 5/1 respectively to leave Anfield in the summer – while 20/1 says the Reds are hit with a double whammy which sees both players leave.

Between them, the Brazilian duo have scored 14 and assisted 10 this season – making the pair responsible for 43.6 per cent of Liverpool’s goals.

And with the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid constantly keeping tabs, we wouldn’t be surprised if one of the La Liga powerhouses took advantage of the Reds’ likely shortcomings at the end of the campaign.

Granted, Coutinho has recently signed a contract extension at the club. But that’s exactly what Luis Suarez did, seven months before signing for Barca – so don’t be fooled by the 24-year-old’s apparent commitment.

As for Firmino, there’s no doubt he could play at the highest level. Granted, Liverpool are a big club, but they’re far from elite.

Worryingly for Liverpool fans, Lucas Leiva is the only current squad member to have represented the club in more than one Champions League campaign – with the Reds qualifying for that competition just once in the last seven seasons.

And of all the sides currently in the top six, you’d have to say it’s Klopp’s men that look likely to finish last in that sextet come May.

If that does happen, it’s hard to see this pair staying on.
