Man City desperate to snap up Inter Milan defender this summer

Published:

It’s no secret that Manchester City’s defence is in need of an upgrade, with the likes of Gael Clichy and Vincent Kompany now past their best. But Pep Guardiola could make a major step towards fixing the Citizens backline this summer, with the signing of Jeison Murillo from Inter Milan.

The Sky Blues reportedly bid for the 24-year-old in January, only to be rebuffed by I Nerazzurri, but that’s unlikely to have deterred Guardiola, who seems set to ramp up his pursuit of the Colombian – and it’s easy to see why.

Murillo has been a key part of one of Serie A’s strongest defences during the past 18 months, and with the former Granada man continuing to impress, the Milanese club have now kept six clean sheets in their last 10 league outings.

And there’s no doubt he’s able to perform on the big stage, having been one of the tournament’s top performers as Colombia reached the Semi-Finals of Copa America in 2016 – while he netted a memorable winner against Brazil in the previous year’s staging.

Physically strong, a classy ball player and possessing a great engine, the centre-back has all the attributes to shine at the top level, and if City can secure a top-four Premier League finish this season, it’s likely he’d find a move to the Etihad too tough to refuse.

That could well see one of the Citizens’ current centre-backs make way, with Kompany tipped to depart by many, following another injury-ravaged campaign.

Next up for Man City is a trip to Huddersfield Town in the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday, with 4/9 on offer for the North-West giants to enjoy victory at the John Smith’s Stadium.
