Leeds lose out in tense affair but touchline clash will take the headlines

It was always going to be a slim chance, but Leeds could have edged even nearer towards an automatic promotion spot with victory over Huddersfield Town this afternoon.
That wasn’t to be though, and although their play-off place is safe for now, Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County and Norwich City can all close the gap on Garry Monk’s men with a game in hand over the Yorkshire outfit.
And while Leeds fans will feel their side were robbed a point today, in truth you’d have to say the hosts deserved the victory.
Chris Wood’s equaliser for the visitors was met by two goal-scoring opportunities for Huddersfield, as Monk’s side could have found themselves 2-1 down before the interval, but for the heroics of both Rob Green and Gaetano Berardi.
And defeat today meant David Wagner’s men leapfrogged their local rivals into fourth place in the table – one point clear of United with a game in hand.
Having already lost 10 games this season, questions will inevitably loom over Leeds’ chances of a return to the Premier League this season. However, the moments of quality we’ve seen from this side so far this season massively outweigh the occasional blips, and we’d still expect the Peacocks to be there or thereabout come May.
But a great game will be somewhat overlooked by actions off the pitch, as both Wagner and Monk were sent to the stands following an altercation in the dying minutes.
The pair clashed after Town grabbed a winner in the 89th minute, as the hosts’ manager looked to grab Monk’s jacket before the pair had to be separated by their backroom staff.
Inevitably, this led to players from both sides getting involved, with four players receiving yellow cards following the incident.
United will welcome Cardiff City to Elland Road next weekend, where they’ll be looking to bounce back from two defeats in their last four games with victory over the Championship strugglers.
Meanwhile, Huddersfield travel to Queens Park Rangers next weekend. And another three points there could see the Terriers close the gap on the top two.
