Ladbrokes World Grand Prix: Trump sees odds cut after First Round win
An impressive victory over Tom Ford in the opening round of the Ladbrokes World Grand Prix has seen Judd Trump’s odds of lifting the trophy for the second time in three years cut to just 6/1, having been 9s before a ball was potted in Preston.
And based on what we saw from the 27-year-old last night, we reckon that could be great value.
In Ford, Trump faced an opponent in fine form. In fact, the number 29 seed even took the lead in the race to four frames, before the world number four stamped his authority on proceedings.
A 145 break in the fourth frame will take some beating this week, while Trump also proved there’s more to his game than break-building.
Three of the four frames he won to progress involved plenty of safety shots, with the Bristol-native avoiding the temptation to play dangerous long pots on several occasions – a sign of just how threatening Trump knew his opponent is.
Here’s what the man himself had to say following his victory…
Up next for Trump is a clash with Barry Hawkins, who defeated Kyren Wilson 4-2 in his opener. Trump is rightly the 8/15 favourite to progress to the last eight, where he faces a potential clash with Ronnie O’Sullivan.
Not that that’ll faze him though – Trump has won three of his last four clashes with the Rocket.
It’s from here on in where things get interesting though, as we could be set for a Judd Trump/Mark Selby semi-final, before a final against the likes of Ding Junhui or last year’s winner, Shaun Murphy awaits him.
It’s by no means an easy route to the trophy, which probably explains why Trump is currently 6/1 to go all the way.
But we know what he’s capable of. And as he’s said himself, he feels he’s playing better than ever on the practice table.
If he takes that onto the main stage, he’ll be a real force in this event.
