Ladbrokes Challenge Cup - Wembley

A dramatic First Round of this season’s Ladbrokes Challenge Cup threw up plenty of juicy talking points with the success of Wigan St. Pats our initial port of call.

The Lancashire side triumphed 16-12 away at Leigh Miners Rangers with their come-from-behind victory streamed live on the BBC Sport website.

Trailing 12-10 heading into the final quarter of the game, St. Pats staged a storming comeback with Phil Mitchell scoring the winning try on 74 minutes.

Around the grounds, this was just one of many storylines from a gripping First Round.

Get ready for big shocks and huge scores!

Here’s how it all unfolded…

Haydock shock the Hornets

North West Men’s League champions Haydock defied a four-division gap to secure a memorable shock against Cumbrian side Wath Brow Hornets.

The St Helens-based side were 10-0 up at the break before eventually going on to win by a stunning 17-4 scoreline.

And understandably, all involved with the club are feeling pretty chuffed right now.

Chargers run riot against Bridgend

It wasn’t quite the record 132-0 win landed by York City Knights over Northumbria University in 2011 but the London Chargers weren’t far away from bettering that feat.

The Conference League South champions dismantled Welsh outfit, the Bridgend Blue Bulls, 116-0 at New River Stadium with halfback Phil Lyon finishing the game with an impressive 52 points.

Elsewhere, Pilkington Recs also notched up a monster victory with their 62-8 victory over Aberdeen Warriors making the 18-hour round trip very worthwhile indeed.

And finally, here’s the full list of First Round results

We’ll be back with build-up and reaction to the Second Round draw, set to take place from 19:00 on Tuesday January 31.
